5 Ways to Make a Good First Impression

We have all heard the saying, “don't judge a book by its cover” but studies have shown that it is a natural reaction for humans to form an impression of a person within the first few seconds of their interaction. Keeping that in mind, here are some of the ways you can make a good first impression:

Be likeable

Because no man is an island in today's workplace, everyone wants to work with likeable people rather than face difficulties day in and day out. Make doubly sure to greet everyone you meet with a smile and work on giving a firm handshake. Maintain eye contact when you are being introduced to people and show warmth in your interactions with them.

Communicate well

Being able to speak articulately is definitely going to be seen as an asset to the team on the business front and in your daily communications. Practice on the way you speak and make sure that you do not pepper your sentences with unnecessary words like "you know", "actually", and excessive "like".

Dress for the part

One of the easiest ways to make sure that you make a good first impression is to dress for the part. Dress too casually and you will come across as a sloppy person who will be equally sloppy at work. Do a little research or check with the company to find out their general dress code. Make sure your clothes fit you well and do not appear crumpled and un-ironed. Invest in good shoes to look professional and polished.

Be well-groomed

The small details matter and nobody wants to work with a colleague who doesn't bother with their personal hygiene. This is one of the most important factors that determine your likeability - it is not difficult to take a shower before heading to work. It is considered good practice for females to put some makeup on. Male or female, make sure that your nails are neat and clean. It is nice to spray on some fragrance, but remember not to overdo it.

Be confident

Confident people are seen as those who are not afraid to take up new challenges and will maintain a better relationship with their colleagues. In fact, all of the points mentioned above will make sure that you appear confident. It is also a good idea to pamper yourself before an interview or starting a new job. This will ensure you to look and feel your best and will also give you an added confidence boost.
